| It seems that I haven't written anything on this blog for a long time. In the time between my last post and today I have dragged into a play (The Music Man), helped host a gigantice basketball tournament (biggest scholastic event in post Soviet Georgia), and been drafted to lead a school team in mock trial extravaganza hosted by our embassy (which sounds rather fun). All in all, it has been a busy spring. | | |
| I have been told by a man in authority that, "when there aren't many distractions in the place one's life, one must look to one's rich inner life for amusement." These are sage words. They bring to mind the Abbe Edmond Dantes meets in the Chateau D'If. Today I found myself wandering through old Tbilisi wondering why John Moschos wrote The Spiritual Meadow with a Georgian script. My inner life had reached the richness of clotted cream. | | |
| My power was off when I woke up this morning. We have been having very strong winds of late, and I thought that perhaps a power line had collapsed. When I looked out my window everyone else seemed to have power. Now, I knew that my electricity bill had been paid, so I got the school to look into the matter. The verdict? Someone had stolen ten meters of electrical cable from my house. My initial option was to wait until next week for the repairman to come, or to pay 110 GEL to replace it myself. Thankfully my housing contract requires my landlord to deal with this sort of stuff. Hopefully I will have power by the end of the day. | | |
| According to some CNN talk show, the last full week in January is the most difficult, and depressing, week in the year. What with credit card bills from the holidays arriving, the lack of sunlight, and knowledge that New Year resolutions won't be lived up to, it is not hard to understand why. It is even harder for teachers, who have to balance their own malaise with that of their students. My particular malaise is manifested in a desire to do nothing (except, perhaps, watch the TV show "LOST"). So forgive my not posting anything. The other problem with posting is that I don't think that much interesting is happening right now. Other than discovering a good Chinese restaurant, having an annoying dude join my gym, and starting to play basketball again there aren't many highlights. oops. gotta run and catch my accountant before she leaves the school. | | |
| My first day at work is over. It went slowly as most people weren't terribly thrilled to by back. Many students haven't yet returned from break, and a sizeable chunk won't do so for a week. We don't have any snow -- some snow can be seen up on the mountains toward Turtle Lake -- and the trees have finally lost all their leaves. My gym continues to be populated by middle aged Norwegian men, who wander through the locker room in the nude. The worst part of about returning to Georgia is that due to jetlag the hours I am awake are also the hours my water is turned off. | | |
